  • WELCOME : Neponsit, Queens

Neponsit is a small affluent neighborhood on the western half of the Rockaway Peninsula, in the southernmost part of Queens, New York. The area begins at Beach 142nd Street and finishes at Beach 149th Street. It shares an eastern border with the Belle Harbor neighborhood and a western border with Jacob Riis Park. Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean form the northern and southern borders. The neighborhood is part of Queens Community Board 14. As of January 1, 2007, the neighborhood’s population was little over 2,000, making it one of the smallest communities on the peninsula and in the entire borough of Queens.

  • History

The current community’s character has persisted since its inception. In January 1910, the Neponsit Realty Company purchased the site with the intention of developing an exclusive neighborhood. It prohibited the development of affordable residences, and the homes were designed to survive the seaside weather and terrain of the tiny peninsula. A large decorative gateway served as the area’s entryway at one point. More recently, a stretch of tree-dotted islets known as “the malls” along Rockaway Beach Boulevard stood out. It continued through Belle Harbor. By the 1930s, high-quality mansions dominated Neponsit.

The first transatlantic trip set off from Neponsit on May 8, 1919, when four United States Navy-Curtis model seaplanes flew to Newfoundland, Canada, the Azores Islands, and Lisbon, Portugal. On May 31, 1919, a single plane flown by Lt. Commander Albert C. Read arrived in Plymouth, England.

 

 

Neponsit is zoned residential, with one- or two-story single-family residences. Because of this, plus its private seaside setting, some residences are mansion-like, and the average market price for properties has surpassed $1 million, according to Zillow.

The television show Rescue Me (FX Network) has been filmed in Neponsit, using residences to represent the fictional homes of some of the characters, albeit the article points out that the “narrative never informs you how a firefighter can afford… [a] Neponsit Home
