Although it was inaccessible by land at the time, a U.S. Coast Guard lifesaving station was situated at Oak Beach, indicating that the area has been occupied since the early 1900s. Before that, the area had been inhabited by marsh bird hunters’ shacks. After the Ocean Parkway was created, cottages could be erected and made more easily accessible by automobile thanks to the ferry access from Babylon. Shannan Gilbert, the initial missing sex worker, was discovered dead in the marsh to the east of the town in December 2011. On November 29, 2011, the police declared that they thought Gilbert’s disappearance before the first set of bodies was discovered was unrelated to the 10 deaths, and that they believed the same person, whom the media has variously referred to as “the Long Island serial killer,” “LISK,” “the Gilgo Beach Killer,” or “the Craigslist Ripper.”[4] Thomas Spota, the district attorney for Suffolk County, stated, “It is evident that the area in and around Gilgo Beach has been used to discard human remains for a considerable amount of time.”
