Since 1988, Ronkonkoma has marked the terminus of electrification along the Long Island Rail Road’s Main Line, with the track segment between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma referred to as the Ronkonkoma Branch. In 2017, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the commencement of a new $650 million development project aimed at establishing a Ronkonkoma Hub near the LIRR Line, mirroring the hub in neighboring Brookhaven.
Additionally, Ronkonkoma holds historical significance as the endpoint of the first road in the United States exclusively designed for automobiles, known as the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway. This road was constructed by the Long Island Motor Parkway, Inc., led by William Kissam Vanderbilt II and a consortium of investors.
As reported by the United States Census Bureau, the CDP encompasses a total area of 8.1 square miles (21.1 km2), with 0.35 square miles (0.9 km2), or 4.07%, consisting of water. Lake Ronkonkoma lies adjacent to the community.
According to the 2020 United States Census, the Census-Designated Place (CDP) of Ronkonkoma was home to 18,955 individuals and 6,150 households. The racial composition of the CDP was reported as 77.7% White, 4.5% African American, 7.7% Asian, 5.1% from other races, and 5.0% from two or more races. Additionally, individuals of Hispanic or Latino origin, regardless of race, accounted for 20.9% of the population.
Regarding age distribution, 20.1% of residents were under 18 years old, while 6.1% were under the age of five, and 13.6% were 65 years or older.
The median household income in the CDP was recorded as $114,216, with a per capita income of $41,792. Approximately 3.5% of the population fell below the poverty line.
Ronkonkoma serves as the headquarters for The Bountiful Company, a manufacturer of vitamins. Additionally, Northrop Grumman operates a hypersonic test and manufacturing facility near the Long Island MacArthur Airport in the vicinity of Ronkonkoma.
Before 1960, the Ronkonkoma School District encompassed the CDP. Subsequently, through a referendum, the district amalgamated with the Oakdale-Bohemia School District, located in Oakdale and Bohemia, New York. This merger led to the establishment of the Connetquot School District. Ronkonkoma hosts three public elementary schools and one middle school, while high school students attend Connetquot High School situated in Bohemia.
