Located in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, USA, Roslyn Heights is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP). Not long after the Oyster Bay Branch of the Long Island Rail Road was completed through and opened in the neighborhood, Roslyn Heights had a significant economic boom in the 1860s.
A corporation was established to develop the hamlet’s northwest portion beginning in 1892. This development corporation was made up of developers, bankers, and attorneys. The Roslyn Highlands development was a mainly futile endeavor. Ultimately, Roslyn Highlands was the name given to the western section of the intended Roslyn Highlands development, and Roslyn Heights was given to the eastern portion. Until the region as a whole was referred to as Roslyn Heights in the late 1920s, the individual portions went by these names.
The Roslyn Heights Post Office opened on July 18, 1913. In 1967, it relocated to 66 Mineola Avenue, where a dedication ceremony was held on Sunday, July 30, 1967.

The Roslyn Country Club neighborhood in Roslyn Heights, south of the Northern State Parkway, proposed to incorporate as a village in the 1950s and 1960s. They cited their desire for home rule in the first instance and their displeasure with Nassau County’s plans to widen Roslyn Road in the second instance. All of Roslyn Heights is still an unincorporated hamlet under the direct government of the Town of North Hempstead because these ideas were eventually rejected.
During the 20th century, the northeastern portion of the hamlet had a significant urban renewal effort, centered on the Roslyn Long Island Rail Road station, also known as Roslyn Plaza. Initiated in the early 1970s, the Roslyn Plaza Urban Renewal Project saw the start of its last phase in 1983. The Town of North Hempstead was responsible for completing this project.
The name “Roslyn” was originally chosen for that hamlet because the topography of Roslyn reminded officials of the topography of Roslin, Scotland. This is why the name “Roslyn” is shared by Roslyn, Roslyn Estates, and Roslyn Harbor. The name of the region that was created under the name Roslyn Heights, which is ultimately the name that the Roslyn Heights Post Office chose to adopt when it was founded in 1913, is reflected in the “Heights” element of its name.
What is presently known as Roslyn Heights was formerly known as Hempstead Harbor until that name was changed to Roslyn in the 1840s, along with many other portions of the Greater Roslyn area.
The CDP is all land, with a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2), according to the US Census Bureau.
Topography
The United States Geological Survey and the United States Environmental Protection Agency state that Roslyn Heights’ highest point is roughly 210 feet (64 meters) above sea level and its lowest point is roughly 100–110 feet (30–34 meters) below sea level, close to the Wheatley Hills Golf Club on the neighborhood’s southeast border.
Drainage
Within the wider Long Island Sound/Atlantic Ocean Watershed, Roslyn Roslyn Heights is divided into three smaller drainage areas: Inner Hempstead Harbor (part of the Hempstead Harbor Watershed), Hempstead Lake, and Mill River (the latter two being part of the Mill River Watershed).
The CDP had 6,295 residents, 2,168 households, and 1,773 families according to the 2000 census. There were 4,223.6 people per square mile (1,630.7/km2) in the population. At an average density of 1,493.5 per square mile (576.6/km2), there were 2,226 dwelling units. Racial composition of the CDP was as follows: 2.00% from other races, 2.40% from two or more races, 0.11% Native American, 10.01% Asian, and 79.03% White. Latinos or Hispanics of any race made up 6.45%.
Of the 2,168 households, 39.1% included children under the age of 18, married couples made up 65.8% of the households, single women made up 12.5%, and non-families made up 18.2%. One person made up 15.6% of households, while one person 65 years of age or older made up 8.9%. The average size of a family was 3.21 and the average size of a household was 2.89.
The breakdown of ages was as follows: 5.8% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 15.9% from 65 and above, and 26.7% from under the age of 18. It was 40 years old on average. There were 93.6 men for every 100 females. There were 90.6 males for every 100 girls over the age of 18.
The median income for a family was $100,474 and for a household it was $84,705. The median income for men was $76,812 while it was $38,343 for women. In the village, the per capita income was $40,132. 5.7% of people and 4.5% of households were living in poverty; this group included 2.7% of people over 65 and 8.4% of people under the age of 18.

Roslyn Heights is under the direct administration of the Manhasset town government because it is an unincorporated portion of the Town of North Hempstead.
Roslyn Heights is situated in the Town of North Hempstead’s second council district as of March 2022. Edward Scott (R–Albertson) is the town council representative for North Hempstead as of March 2024.

School districts
The majority of Roslyn Heights is situated inside the borders of the Roslyn Union Free School District, and is therefore under its jurisdiction. Smaller sections of the hamlet, however, are in the Mineola School District, the Herricks Union Free School District, and the East Williston Union Free School District. As a result, depending on where they live in the hamlet, Roslyn Heights residents who attend public schools will attend classes in one of these four districts.
Library districts
Roslyn Heights is divided between the Shelter Rock Library District (provided by the Shelter Rock Public Library) and the Roslyn Library District (served by the Bryant Library). The hamlet’s regions inside the confines of the East Williston and Herricks Union Free School Districts are served by the Shelter Rock Library District, while the Bryant Library serves the portions of the hamlet inside the Roslyn Union Free School District.

Part of Roslyn Heights has sewerage. The Nassau County Sewage District includes Roslyn Heights’ southern portion. Within Roslyn Heights, in the vicinity of Roslyn Plaza, there is another, smaller sewer district that feeds into the East Hills Interceptor line, which connects to the rest of Nassau County’s sewer system.
