Upton, a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) nestled in the town of Brookhaven on Long Island, boasts notable landmarks such as the Brookhaven National Laboratory and a National Weather Service weather forecast office.
Situated on the eastern end of Long Island in Suffolk County, New York, Upton derives its name from its historical significance as the site of the U.S. Army’s Camp Upton. This military installation operated from 1917 to 1920 and again from 1940 to 1946. During World War II, it played a pivotal role as an induction center for draftees and later served as a convalescent and rehabilitation hospital for returning wounded soldiers.
One of the key features of Upton is the Long Island Solar Farm (LISF), a 32 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic array, which stands as the largest of its kind in the eastern United States. Comprising 164,312 solar panels, the LISF generates sufficient electricity to power approximately 4,500 households and contributes to the reduction of over 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Recognized for its excellence, the project received the Best Photovoltaic Project of the Year Award from the New York Solar Energy Industries Association.
Since October 1993, Upton has been home to the National Weather Service New York City Weather Forecast Office (WFO code “OKX”), serving the meteorological needs of the bustling New York metropolitan area. This office is conveniently situated within the grounds of the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
